Rill Erosion on Compost Blankets under Concentrated Flow Conditions

چکیده
A flume study was conducted using a soil, yard waste compost, and an erosion control compost to investigate the response to concentrated flow and determine if the shear stress model could be used to describe the response. Yard waste compost (YWC) and the bare Cecil soil (CS) control responded to concentrated laboratory runoff similarly in rill formation, and the shear stress model was useful in estimating sediment yields from both of these land covers. Results indicated that critical shear stress values for yard waste compost and Cecil soil were not significantly different. However, the erodibility of the soil was higher, resulting in increased solids loss, on the Cecil soil. Micro‐dams, the main mechanism for limiting soil erosion for the compost, often occurred in the rills of the erosion control compost (ECC), causing the concentrated flow to infiltrate and fan out through the compost. Since flow could not be maintained in the rill, parameters for the stress model could not be determined for the erosion control compost.

Understanding rill erosion rate in dry-wet condition
Rill erosion is considered to be the most important process affecting soils created by the concentrated flow of water. In this research to quantify sediment transport and runoff in natural rills, two rill experiments under dry and wet conditions were accomplished in November 2013 in the Golestan Dam. Filed experiments lead to a closer understanding of the dynamics and power of different soil er...
متن کاملAn Improved Experimental Method for Simulating Erosion Processes by Concentrated Channel Flow
Rill erosion is an important process that occurs on hill slopes, including sloped farmland. Laboratory simulations have been vital to understanding rill erosion. Previous experiments obtained sediment yields using rills of various lengths to get the sedimentation process, which disrupted the continuity of the rill erosion process and was time-consuming. In this study, an improved experimental m...
متن کاملErosion control and storm water quality from straw with pAm, mulch, and compost blankets of varying particle sizes
Compost and mulch blankets have been widely used for slope stabilization and erosion control at construction sites; however, the majority of research on these erosion control blankets has failed to meet state or federal specifications for particle size distribution. The primary objective of this study was to determine how blending wood mulch with compost may affect its performance as an erosion...
متن کاملUse of Composted Waste Materials in Erosion Control
The objective of this series of studies was to investigate the use of compost and mulch materials in erosion control and stabilization projects. The first phase of the study primarily looked at the impacts of surface blankets of twelve different compost and mulch materials on total solids (TS) loss and water quality and found that mulch blankets produced runoff with the lowest TS and nutrient c...

Few studies have been done regarding the role of the raindrop in the hydrodinamic mechanism of soil erosion. In this study, rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to evaluate the role of raindrop in runoff discharge, sediment concentration and hydraulic properties of flow under four slope gradients (5, 10, 15 and 20%) in a clay soil using a 90 mm.h-1 rainfall intensity to reach the stea...
